Michigan’s historic lighthouses have stood watch over the Great Lakes for generations. This collection reimagines those familiar landmarks through brilliant sunset color, expressive oil-painting-inspired texture, luminous reflections, dramatic shorelines, and historic architecture.

The artist’s sunset signature

A defining signature of my work is the way I interpret the sky at sunset. I use brilliant, exaggerated color to draw attention to the transformation that happens along the horizon as daylight fades. Oranges, golds, reds, turquoise, violet, and deep blue are layered together to make the sky feel active, luminous, and emotionally charged.

The sunset is never meant to be just a background. It becomes part of the subject itself, helping frame the landscape, emphasize architecture, reflect across the water, and bring attention to the character of the shoreline.

Whether the scene is in Michigan, Arizona, or somewhere else entirely, that transformed skyline is one of the recurring visual signatures of my artwork.

Michigan Lighthouse Collection No. 01

Grand Haven South Pier Light

Grand Haven, Michigan • Lake Michigan

Grand Haven’s famous red lighthouse and elevated catwalk stretch into Lake Michigan beneath a transformed sunset sky of fiery orange, gold, crimson, turquoise, violet, and deep blue. Brilliant reflected color moves across the water while the strong lines of the pier frame one of Michigan’s most recognizable waterfront scenes.

A Little History

Grand Haven’s first lighthouse was built in 1839. The south-pier steel tower received the earlier light’s Fresnel lens in 1905 and moved to its present position in 1907.

Big Sable Point Lighthouse

Ludington, Michigan • Lake Michigan

The towering black-and-white Big Sable Point Lighthouse rises above dunes and shoreline vegetation while the sky erupts into the signature colors of the collection. Deep blues and turquoise meet brilliant gold, red, orange, and violet, giving this remote Lake Michigan landmark a powerful presence.

A Little History

Built in 1867, Big Sable Point’s black-and-white tower rises 112 feet above the Lake Michigan shoreline. It stands among the dunes and jack pines of Ludington State Park.

Holland Harbor Lighthouse “Big Red”

Holland, Michigan • Lake Michigan

Michigan’s beloved Big Red becomes the centerpiece of an intensely colorful Lake Michigan sunset. Its unmistakable red architecture glows against sweeping bands of gold, scarlet, turquoise, cobalt, and violet while fractured reflections dance across the water.

A Little History

The present building began as a fog-signal station in 1907. A light tower was added in 1936, creating the distinctive structure now known as Big Red.

Whitefish Point Light

Paradise, Michigan • Lake Superior

Whitefish Point’s distinctive lighthouse stands against the rugged character of Lake Superior beneath a luminous northern sky. Fiery sunset colors break through deep blue and turquoise shadows, illuminating the shoreline and historic light station in dramatic contrast.

A Little History

Whitefish Point’s original stone lighthouse was built in 1849. The present iron tower replaced it in 1861, with a design better suited to the powerful winds of Lake Superior.

Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse

Mackinaw City, Michigan • Straits of Mackinac

Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse overlooks the Straits beneath a brilliant transformed skyline, with the Mackinac Bridge appearing beyond the historic station. Warm architecture, shimmering water, and layered sunset color come together in an unmistakably northern Michigan scene.

A Little History

Completed in 1892, Old Mackinac Point helped guide vessels through the Straits of Mackinac. The station closed in 1957, when the newly opened Mackinac Bridge’s lights made the lighthouse unnecessary.

Point Betsie Lighthouse

Frankfort, Michigan • Lake Michigan

Point Betsie’s classic white tower and red-roofed keeper’s residence overlook Lake Michigan beneath a sky alive with orange, crimson, gold, turquoise, violet, and deep blue. Dunes and water provide a peaceful foreground while the sunset becomes the emotional center of the composition.

Point Betsie has guided mariners on Lake Michigan since 1858. The preserved station also tells the story of lighthouse keeping and Great Lakes lifesaving operations.

St. Joseph North Pier Lights

St. Joseph, Michigan • Lake Michigan

The historic St. Joseph pier stretches into Lake Michigan beneath an explosive evening sky. The lighthouse structures and long catwalk create dramatic architectural lines against glowing gold, red, cobalt, turquoise, and violet reflections.

A Little History

The present inner and outer pier lights replaced earlier lights in 1906 and 1907. An elevated catwalk connects the shore with both towers at the mouth of the St. Joseph River.

Tawas Point Lighthouse

East Tawas, Michigan • Lake Huron

Tawas Point Lighthouse sits quietly along Lake Huron as the shoreline is transformed by brilliant evening light. Warm architectural tones contrast with deep blue water and a sky layered in gold, orange, scarlet, turquoise, and violet.

A Little History

Built in 1876, the present lighthouse marked the entrance to Tawas Bay and warned vessels away from the point’s shallow water. It replaced an earlier light as the sandy shoreline changed.

Eagle Harbor Lighthouse rises from the rugged Keweenaw Peninsula beneath a spectacular Lake Superior sunset. Evergreen shoreline, rock, water, and historic architecture are united through deep blues, turquoise, fiery oranges, reds, and luminous gold.

A Little History

Eagle Harbor’s first lighthouse was built in 1851 to aid Lake Superior shipping. The deteriorating original structure was replaced by the present red-brick lighthouse in 1871.

Forty Mile Point Lighthouse

Forty Mile Point’s white lighthouse complex overlooks the Lake Huron shoreline beneath one of the collection’s richly transformed skies. Gold and orange light break across deep blues, crimson, turquoise, and violet, illuminating the historic architecture and surrounding landscape.

A Little History

Forty Mile Point was completed in November 1896 and first lit on April 30, 1897. The keeper and assistant lived in separate apartments within the lighthouse building.
